electronic or digital original materials, including photos, graphic images, text and other components needed to create project.<\/dd>\n
Back Up<\/dt>\n
how an image on one side of a printed sheet aligns with the image on the other side.<\/dd>\n
Bindery<\/dt>\n
cutting, folding, collating, drilling, stapling, coiling and other finishing operations used on printed projects.<\/dd>\n
Bleed<\/dt>\n
any element that extends up to, or past, the edge of a printed page. When trimmed, color will \u201cbleed\u201d lending a professional finish to the piece.<\/dd>\n
Blind emboss<\/dt>\n
an impression that is made without using inks or metal foils.<\/dd>\n
Body<\/dt>\n
the main portion of the text for a letter, brochure, etc.<\/dd>\n
Bond<\/dt>\n
a grade of durable writing, printing and typing paper that is erasable and somewhat rigid.<\/dd>\n
Bulk<\/dt>\n
a term given to paper to describe its thickness relative to its weight.<\/dd>\n
C1S and C2S<\/dt>\n
acronyms for Coated One Side and Coated Two Sides paper stock. C1S is a cover stock with a glossy finish on one side and uncoated on the other; C2S is a cover stock with a glossy finish on both sides.<\/dd>\n
CMYK<\/dt>\n
references the four inks used in four-color process printing. Cyan (also referenced as process blue), magenta, yellow and key (black).<\/dd>\n
Carbonless Paper<\/dt>\n
(Also known as NCR)Paper that is chemically treated to transfer the impression from the first page to the subsequent pages.<\/dd>\n
Center Spread<\/dt>\n
the two pages that face each other in the center of a book or publication.<\/dd>\n
Clip art<\/dt>\n
artwork in digital form that can be used in a document.<\/dd>\n
Coated stock<\/dt>\n
any paper that has a mineral coating applied after the paper is made, giving the paper a smoother finish.<\/dd>\n
Coil Binding<\/dt>\n
plastic wire spiraled through holes punched along the side of a stack of paper. Commonly used for reports, proposals and manuals. Also called spiral binding.<\/dd>\n
Collate<\/dt>\n
to gather sheets or printed signatures together in their correct order.<\/dd>\n
Color balance<\/dt>\n
the relative amounts of process colors used to reproduce an image, either digitally or when printed on a press.<\/dd>\n
Color bars<\/dt>\n
a color test strip that is printed on the waste portion of a press sheet. It helps a press operator to monitor and control the quality of the printed material relative to ink density, registration and dot gain.<\/dd>\n
Color correction<\/dt>\n
using a computer to adjust, change or manipulate a color image, such as retouching, adjusting color balance, color saturation, contrast, etc.<\/dd>\n
Color separating<\/dt>\n
the processes of separating the primary color components (CMYK) for printing.<\/dd>\n
Color shift<\/dt>\n
change in the perceived color of elements on a printed piece caused by changes or irregularities in ink densities, dot gain, or color register during a four-color printing press run.<\/dd>\n
Color swatch<\/dt>\n
a sample of a specific color (such as PMS 282 \u2013 the branded ETSU blue) which aides in gauging consistency in printing.<\/dd>\n
Condensed type<\/dt>\n
a narrow, elongated typeface.<\/dd>\n
Contrast<\/dt>\n
the degree of tonal separation or gradation in the range from black to white.<\/dd>\n
Cover<\/dt>\n
a term describing a general type of paper used for the covers of books, pamphlets, etc., also used for business cards and postcards.<\/dd>\n
Coverage<\/dt>\n
the extent to which printing ink covers the surface of a printed sheet. Ink coverage is frequently expressed as light, medium or heavy.<\/dd>\n
Crop<\/dt>\n
to reduce the size of an image.<\/dd>\n
Crop marks<\/dt>\n
small printed lines around the edges of a printed piece indicating where it is to be cut out of the sheet. Sometimes referred to as cut marks.<\/dd>\n
Crossover<\/dt>\n
an image, rule or line art on one printed page that carries over to an adjacent page of a bound or folded work.<\/dd>\n
Cyan<\/dt>\n
a shade of blue used in four-color process printing.The C in CMYK. Also referred to as process blue.<\/dd>\n
Dashboard<\/dt>\n
a personalized system panel for an individual user that provides real-time information related to assigned projects.<\/dd>\n
Deboss<\/dt>\n
to press an image into paper with a die so it extends below the surface. The opposite of emboss where the image is raised above the paper surface.<\/dd>\n
Density<\/dt>\n
the degree of tone, weight of darkness or color within a photo or reproduction measured by a densitometer.<\/dd>\n
Die Cutting<\/dt>\n
the process of cutting paper in a shape or design by the use of a wooden die or block in which are positioned steel rules in the shape of the desired pattern.<\/dd>\n
Digital Archive<\/dt>\n
the working project files housed on a shared server.<\/dd>\n
Digital Proof<\/dt>\n
color separation data is digitally stored and then exposed to color photographic paper creating a picture of the final product before it is actually printed with ink.<\/dd>\n
Dot<\/dt>\n
the smallest individual element of a halftone.<\/dd>\n
Dot gain<\/dt>\n
a term used to describe when dots are printing larger than they should.<\/dd>\n
Drill<\/dt>\n
the drilling of holes into paper for ring or comb binding.<\/dd>\n
Drop shadow<\/dt>\n
a shadow image placed offset behind an image to create the affect of the image lifting off the page.<\/dd>\n
Dull finish<\/dt>\n
a semi-gloss finish on paper that is less glossy than gloss, and more than matte.<\/dd>\n
Dummy<\/dt>\n
the preliminary assemblage of copy and art elements to be reproduced in the desired finished product, also called a comp.<\/dd>\n
Dutone<\/dt>\n
a two-color halftone reproduction generated from a one color photo.<\/dd>\n
Dye sublimation<\/dt>\n
a photographic looking color print created by heating dyes on a substrate instead of using inks. Often used for proofing.<\/dd>\n
Electronic Proof<\/dt>\n
a process of generating a prepress proof.<\/dd>\n
Embossing<\/dt>\n
the molding and reshaping of paper by the use of special metal dies and heat, counter dies and pressure, to produce a raised image on the paper surface.<\/dd>\n
EPS<\/dt>\n
encapsulated Post Script. A standard file format used to transfer postscript-formatting information between applications.<\/dd>\n
Estimate<\/dt>\n
a summary of all associated costs for production of a project.<\/dd>\n
Finish<\/dt>\n
the surface quality of a paper.<\/dd>\n
Fluid<\/dt>\n
references a state of constant change. Example: a project in a fluid state may be bouncing between project managers and\/or stages while multiple steps are achieved simultaneously.<\/dd>\n
Foil<\/dt>\n
the metal sheet that is applied to paper using the foil stamping process. Frequently gold colored, but available in many colors.<\/dd>\n
Foil Embossing<\/dt>\n
stamping a thin sheet of metallic foil onto a sheet of paper and then embossing a pattern under it, creating a three-dimensional raised area, usually text or an image. See a sample of foil embossing.<\/dd>\n
Foil Stamping<\/dt>\n
impressing metallic foil onto paper with a heated die.<\/dd>\n
Font<\/dt>\n
the characters which make up a complete typeface and size.<\/dd>\n
FPO – For Position Only<\/dt>\n
low resolution or mockup images used to indicate placement and size in a design, but not intended for final production.<\/dd>\n
Gathering<\/dt>\n
assembling sheets of paper and signatures into their proper sequence. See also collate.<\/dd>\n
Gutter<\/dt>\n
a blank space or margin between components on a printed piece or press sheet.<\/dd>\n
Hard Archive<\/dt>\n
refers to the hard copy project files housed in BMC.<\/dd>\n
Highlights<\/dt>\n
the lightest tones of a photo, printed halftone or illustration. In the finished halftone, these highlights are represented by the finest dots.<\/dd>\n
Image area<\/dt>\n
that portion of a printing plate that carries ink and prints on paper.<\/dd>\n
Imposition<\/dt>\n
the correct sequential arrangement of pages that are to be printed, along with all the margins in proper alignment, before producing the plates for printing.<\/dd>\n
Indicia<\/dt>\n
an image and\/or text pre-printed on mailing envelopes in place of a stamp.<\/dd>\n
Insert<\/dt>\n
a piece of printed material that is inserted into another piece of printed material, such as a magazine or catalog.<\/dd>\n
Italic<\/dt>\n
text that is used to denote emphasis by slanting the type body forward.<\/dd>\n
Jog<\/dt>\n
to vibrate a stack of finished pages so that they are tightly aligned for final trimming or binding.<\/dd>\n
Justification<\/dt>\n
adjusting the spacing or hyphenation of words and characters to fill a given line of text from end to end. Sometimes referred to as word spacing.<\/dd>\n
Kerning<\/dt>\n
the narrowing of space between two letters so that they become closer and take up less space on the page.<\/dd>\n
Kraft<\/dt>\n
a coarse unbleached paper used for printing and industrial products.<\/dd>\n
Lamination<\/dt>\n
applying thin transparent plastic sheets to both sides of a sheet of paper, providing scuff resistance, waterproofing and extended use.<\/dd>\n
Landscape<\/dt>\n
a document layout where the width is greater than the height. (the opposite of Portrait)<\/dd>\n
Layout<\/dt>\n
a rendition that shows the placement of all the elements, images, thumbnails etc., of a final printed piece.<\/dd>\n
Leading<\/dt>\n
space between lines of type. The distance in points between one baseline and the next.<\/dd>\n
Letterspacing<\/dt>\n
the addition of space between typeset letters.<\/dd>\n
Linen<\/dt>\n
a paper that emulates the look and texture of linen cloth.<\/dd>\n
Logotype<\/dt>\n
a personalized type or design symbol for a company or product.<\/dd>\n
Loupe<\/dt>\n
a small magnifier used to observe the details on a printed sheet.<\/dd>\n
Magenta<\/dt>\n
one of the four process colors, or CMYK, the M is for magenta. Magenta is a predominately red color with some blue. Magenta, cyan and yellow are also the three subtractive primary colors.<\/dd>\n
Magnetic Black<\/dt>\n
black ink containing iron oxides, used for magnetic ink character recognition used for check printing.<\/dd>\n
Matte finish<\/dt>\n
a coated paper finish that goes through minimal calendaring.<\/dd>\n
Natural<\/dt>\n
a term to describe papers that have a color similar to that of wood, also called cream, off-white or ivory.<\/dd>\n
Offset printing<\/dt>\n
a method of printing where the printed material does not receive ink directly from a printing plate but from an intermediary blanket that receives the ink from the plate and then transfers it to the paper.<\/dd>\n
Onionskin<\/dt>\n
a light bond paper used for typing and used with carbon paper because of its thinness.<\/dd>\n
Opacity<\/dt>\n
quality of papers that defines its opaqueness or ability to prevent two-sided printing from showing through.<\/dd>\n
Overrun<\/dt>\n
quantities of sheets printed over the requested number of copies.<\/dd>\n
Pagination<\/dt>\n
the numbering of individual pages in a multi-page document.<\/dd>\n
Parchment<\/dt>\n
a hard finished paper that emulates animal skin used for documents, such as awards.<\/dd>\n
Perfect Binding<\/dt>\n
a binding process where the signatures of a book are held together by a flexible adhesive.<\/dd>\n
Pica<\/dt>\n
a typesetting unit of measurement equaling 1\/6th of an inch.<\/dd>\n
PMS<\/dt>\n
the abbreviation of the Pantone Color Matching System.<\/dd>\n
Point<\/dt>\n
a measurement unit equal to 1\/72 of an inch. 12 points to a pica, 72 points to an inch.<\/dd>\n
Portrait<\/dt>\n
a document layout in which the height is greater than the width. (the opposite of Landscape)<\/dd>\n
Premium<\/dt>\n
any paper that is considered better than grade #1 by its manufacturer.<\/dd>\n
Press Check<\/dt>\n
a visual check of results for a piece printed on an offset press, during set up, and before the run is produced.<\/dd>\n
Pressure-sensitive<\/dt>\n
self-adhesive paper covered by a backing sheet.<\/dd>\n
Process printing<\/dt>\n
a system where a color image is separated into different color values (cyan, magenta, yellow and black or CMYK) by the use of filters and screens or digitally with a software program and then transferred to printing plates and printed on a printing press, reproducing the original color image.<\/dd>\n
Project Path<\/dt>\n
the path from inception throughout production based upon specifications, deadline and customer need. While some tasks from a project path are shared on the status timeline, the project path is the more holistic view for team members of how the project will be completed.<\/dd>\n
Project Platform<\/dt>\n
is the part of the system that primarily serves the customer and communicates progression of the project. Here, the customer can access all account information such as: order history, project status, estimates and invoicing. Team members interface with the customer on the project platform and particular items report from the traffic hub in real-time.<\/dd>\n
Ragged left<\/dt>\n
the term given to right-justified type that is uneven on the left.<\/dd>\n
Ragged right<\/dt>\n
the term given to left-justified type that is uneven on the right.<\/dd>\n
Ream<\/dt>\n
typically 500 sheets of paper.<\/dd>\n
Registration<\/dt>\n
the arrangement of two or more printed images in exact alignment with each other.<\/dd>\n
Register marks<\/dt>\n
any cross marks or other symbols used on a press sheet to assure proper registration.<\/dd>\n
RGB<\/dt>\n
the color space of Red, Green and Blue. These are the primary colors of light, which computers use to display images on your screen. An RGB computer file must be translated into the CMYK (the primary colors of pigment) color space in order to be printed on a printing press.<\/dd>\n
Rich black<\/dt>\n
using multiple ink colors in addition to black to produce a deep, dark black color. Common CMYK values used are 30% Cyan, 20% Magenta, 20% Yellow and 100% Black.<\/dd>\n
Right angle fold<\/dt>\n
a term that denotes folds that are 90 degrees to each other.<\/dd>\n
Saddle stitch<\/dt>\n
the binding of booklets or other printed materials by stapling the pages on the folded spine.<\/dd>\n
Scoring<\/dt>\n
to crease paper with a metal rule for the purpose of making folding easier.<\/dd>\n
Self cover<\/dt>\n
a cover that is the same paper stock as the internal sheets.<\/dd>\n
Sharpen<\/dt>\n
to decrease the dot size of a halftone, which in turn decreases the color strength.<\/dd>\n
Show through<\/dt>\n
when the printing on one side of a sheet is seen from the other side, a frequent problem with thin papers.<\/dd>\n
Side stitch<\/dt>\n
the stapling of sheets or signatures on the side closest to the spine.<\/dd>\n
Signature<\/dt>\n
a printed sheet with multiple pages on it that is folded so that the pages are in their proper numbered sequence, as in a book.<\/dd>\n
Smoothness<\/dt>\n
that quality of paper defined by its levelness that allows for pressure consistency in printing, assuring uniformity of print.<\/dd>\n
Spiral bind<\/dt>\n
a type of binding where a metal or plastic wire is spiraled through holes drilled along the binding side of a document.<\/dd>\n
Spot Traffic<\/dt>\n
is to check availability of team members and\/or current jobs in production.<\/dd>\n
Stock<\/dt>\n
a term for unprinted paper.<\/dd>\n
Text paper<\/dt>\n
a high quality light weight printing paper.<\/dd>\n
Thermography<\/dt>\n
a printing process whereby slow drying ink is applied to paper and, while the ink is still wet, is lightly dusted with a resinous powder. The paper then passes through a heat chamber where the powder melts and fuses with the ink to produce a raised surface.<\/dd>\n
Tint<\/dt>\n
a halftone screen that contains all the same sized dots.<\/dd>\n
Traffic Alert<\/dt>\n
an emailed notification, which alerts a team member of tasks being assigned for an upcoming project, or a change in status of a project.<\/dd>\n
Trim marks<\/dt>\n
marks placed on the printed sheet to indicate where cuts should be made.<\/dd>\n
Trim size<\/dt>\n
the final size of a printed piece after being cut from the sheet of paper that it was printed on.<\/dd>\n
Typo<\/dt>\n
a spelling mistake in printed material resulting from a mistake in typing or setting type. See common printing term misspellings.<\/dd>\n
Up<\/dt>\n
a term used to describe how many similar pieces can be printed on a larger sheet; two up, four up, etc.<\/dd>\n
UV Coating<\/dt>\n
a very shiny and durable high gloss coating applied to printed material. Applied as a liquid then cured with ultraviolet light.<\/dd>\n
Variable Data Printing<\/dt>\n
a form of personalized on-demand printing in which elements (such as text, graphics, photographs, etc.) can be changed from one printed piece to the next, without stopping or slowing down production, using information from a database.<\/dd>\n
Vellum<\/dt>\n
a finish of paper that is somewhat bulky and is slightly rough.<\/dd>\n
Vignette<\/dt>\n
a photo or illustration, in which the tones fade gradually away until they blend with the background on which they are printed.<\/dd>\n
Warm color<\/dt>\n
a color with a reddish tone rather than a blue tone. Browns, oranges, reds, and yellows are generally considered to be “warm” colors.<\/dd>\n
Watermark<\/dt>\n
a translucent mark or image that is embossed during the papermaking process, or printed onto paper, which is visible when the paper is held up to the light.<\/dd>\n
Web press<\/dt>\n
a printing press that prints on rolls of paper passed through the press in one continuous piece, as opposed to individual sheets of paper.<\/dd>\n
Widow<\/dt>\n
a single word or two left at the end of a paragraph, or a part of a sentence ending a paragraph, which loops over to the next page and stands alone. Also, the last sentence of a paragraph, which contains only one or two short words.<\/dd>\n
Work and Turn<\/dt>\n
a printing production format that has the front and back of a printed piece on one side of the paper, that is then printed the same on the back side, producing two copies of the piece.<\/dd>\n
Writing paper<\/dt>\n
another name for bond paper.<\/dd>\n
Yellow<\/dt>\n
one of the four process colors of ink, or CMYK. The Y is for yellow.<\/dd>\n
Zip file<\/dt>\n
a file that has been compressed into a smaller archive to require less drive space and less time for file transfer.<\/dd>\n
80# Gloss Text<\/dt>\n
standard glossy paper stock, about as thick as a light magazine cover. The shiny finish provides an excellent opaque base for rich process color printing. This is our most popular stock for: Brochures, Catalog Inserts, Flyers, Posters, etc.<\/dd>\n
100# Gloss Text<\/dt>\n
similar to the 80# gloss text, but 25% thicker and heavier, for a piece that feels more substantial. Standard Uses: Brochures, Information Sheets, Self-mailers, etc.<\/dd>\n
80# Dull\/Matte Text<\/dt>\n
this stock is finely coated with a non-gloss finish. It provides an excellent opaque base for easy to read, crisp typography. Standard Uses: Brochures, Catalog Inserts, and Flyers, etc.<\/dd>\n
80# Gloss Cover<\/dt>\n
as a “cover” stock, this paper is stiff, about like a postcard or baseball card. This stock is coated with a glossy finish, making photographs and other images look beautiful. Standard uses: durable, heavy-weight Brochures, Catalog Covers, Product Spec Sheets.<\/dd>\n
80# Uncoated Cover<\/dt>\n
an option for business cards, rack cards and bookmarks. This bright white smooth #1 grade cover stock is 14pt in thickness and matches the 70# text-weight stock we use for letterhead and envelopes.<\/dd>\n
120# Gloss Cover<\/dt>\n
